International Education
The postgraduate programme is a unique and innovative approach to international architectural education: it combines the idea of the classical artist journey with the intensive, interdisciplinary and project-oriented workshop tradition and teamwork, focusing on acute topics generating architectural knowledge and dialogue across greater Europe between cities as Tallinn, Lisbon, Helsinki, Berlin, Dessau, Ljubljana, Innsbruck and Haifa.
Rethinking European Cities
Architectural practice has to deal with complex problems today. The tremendous transformation of the European city requires individuals who are able to perceive things in association, as team-generalists. What are relevant fields today of re-thinking cities beyond the limits of growth? How do phenomena such as de-industrialization, touristification or the never-ending urban sprawl affect architect’s profession? And: How do we accumulate architectural knowledge and generate site-specific solutions in a socially responsible mindset, together with students, professors, and local experts?
11 Workshops at 6 Universities + 1 Master’s Thesis
The two-year training is structured around a series of 8 project workshops + 3 reflective workshops at 6 different higher education institutions: Urban planning as well as architectural and artistic issues – open questions virulent to the cities & regions of the participating universities – will be examined at all scales; multi-dimensional planning processes, design and communication strategies constitute integral parts of a democratic culture of building to transform existing buildings and urban quarters with regard to ecological sustainability. Problems will be resolved in the context of cultural heritage and pre-existing structures.
Key features
Intensive Group & Team Work
Professors from all participating universities work together with a small group of max. 15-25 international postgraduate students during the two years. The international group of students follows the workshop sequence at 6 +2 changing places at the participating universities always together. The professors of all participating universities meet regularly within the in-between-colloquium, the final master’s thesis cooperation and Skype meetings to accompany the quality development.
Site Specific Problems with Local Experts
The teaching is realized on topics of 8 different problems/sites, defined by each responsible professor from each of the eight participating universities or institutions in cooperation with local lecturers, researchers, and governors.
Workshop Research, Project Oriented
Each responsible professor defines one site-specific research focus and relevant urban question, to work on in the study program. The workshop series of each academic rotation takes place as cumulative research of the university, of the professor.
Research Through Design
The cooperation takes place via research through design, the contemporary term of traditional research-oriented and studio-based architectural project work via workshops.
Research About Design
Three consecutive Design Reflection workshops serve to reflect positions, approaches, and processes, to „design the design processes“, and to evaluate and exchange the results of the program between professors, students, and alumni.
Cooperation of International and Local Students
The students of the international group work in cooperation with the on-site students of each university and in dialogue with professors and guest lecturers of the country within the frame of the workshop at each university.
Knowledge Transfer
The exchange of the results, the knowledge transfer, takes place after each workshop in public exhibitions, with guest teaching and critics, by regular round tables and by yearly conferences of all participants, students, and professors (Platform of European Architecture Dialogue).
